Challenge the Status Quo in DOOH

Over the past year, we have seen some amazing campaigns related to DOOH. After a wonderful inaugural edition, it is now time for the second edition during which we once again challenge all creative minds to be even more extreme, innovative, unconventional and groundbreaking. The Ocean Digital Creative Competition is an annual competition during which advertising agencies, media agencies, design studios, digital agencies, brands and basically anyone with a creative mindset can push the boundaries of DOOH. The grand prize up for grabs in this competition is €500,000 in gross media budget.

Let your idea go big

The Ocean network consists of large digital and conventional displays. The 183 digital displays located near prominent cities, motorways, shopping centres and public transport hubs make ours the largest creative (D)OOH platform in the Netherlands. When we say “large,” we mean it! We have rotating digital displays that measure 17m² , displays of 60m² located in busy shopping districts and displays of more than 108m² along the busiest motorways in the country. The Digital Creative Competition

This competition gives anyone a chance to develop innovative concepts for Ocean’s Digital Out of Home displays together with a client. In 2010, Ocean Outdoor UK organised the first Digital Creative Competition to promote and expedite new opportunities in screen advertising. More than ten competitions later, technological developments have transformed outdoor advertising from static to subtle motion, full motion, interactive, live streaming, augmented reality and 3D simulations. Ocean is constantly investing in new and innovative opportunities to help brands form stronger connections to their audience. Using the right supporting techniques and insights, the possibilities for brands, agencies and the public are endless.

Jury & Event

The jury consists of a mix of renowned members. Creative, digital, innovation or media, but each one valued colleagues who represent the entire spectrum. The finalists will be announced after the first jury round. All entries that meet the selection criteria will be presented to the judges. The competition will be awarded offline and online.

Prizes & Categories

Entries will be judged by the jury within the two categories, namely commercial and non-profit. In both categories, the numbers one, two and three win an amount in gross media value*. Amounts that are fully usable on the digital screens of Ocean Outdoor Nederland!

Creative briefing

We are looking for creative concepts that make full use of the available possibilities and push the boundaries of Digital Out of Home. Are you the groundbreaking agency we seek or have you been walking around with the perfect idea for a campaign for years? Sign up for our competition. We welcome all ideas and want to make participating in this competition easy and accessible for everyone. Advertising, design, content or media agency, advertiser, digital hero or all-round genius. Whether you have your idea written down on a sticky note or a beer mat, whether you have a full case ready to go or whether you use After Effects or Photoshop; everything goes, as long as your idea is clear and meets a number of selection criteria. For example, your idea must be original and cannot yet be running on any other media platforms. Furthermore, all ideas must comply with the regulations of the Dutch Advertising Code.

Step 1 Concept

Develop your concept in accordance with the aforementioned briefing. Make sure your idea is relevant for the brand and tailored to the goal and the medium. Make sure to get your client/brand’s permission before submitting your idea. Alongside your visuals, we ask that you also include a brief written description of your idea (maximum length: 500 words). In your description, please explain how you envision your idea live, on what displays, how this suits your brand, whom you hope to reach with your idea, etcetera.

Step 2 Visualisation

To keep the process of participating in the competition as simple as possible, we ask that you create several (no more than five) visualisations of your concept. We have a whole range of (Photoshop) mock-ups that you can use for your visualisation. The clearer your visualisation is, the better – but remember than we do not require any “final artwork” at this stage. To make things even easier, you can even sketch out your idea on a piece of paper, a sticky note or a beer mat. Take a picture and submit it to us.

Stap 3 Submit your idea!

Submit your idea via the registration form below before 23.59 on Friday 06 May or email to Once we have received your submission, you will receive a confirmation via email and be entered into the competition. Make sure to read the general terms and conditions beforehand. By submitting your work, you accept our terms and conditions.

Conditions and assessment criteria

Your idea must be new and it cannot be an existing idea.

  • Your idea cannot yet be running on any other media platforms.
  • We welcome all creative ideas, expressions and messages.
  • Is your message conveyed effectively on the DOOH displays?
  • Does your idea make good use of the unique possibilities of DOOH?
  • Is the idea relevant for the brand/company goals?
  • The brand/company must consent to your participation.
  • All ideas have to comply with the regulations of the Dutch Advertising Code.
  • Our standard ad lengths are 6, 10, 12, 18 and 24 seconds, but you can also utilise the full sixty-second loop. Keep in mind that the available gross media value is based on a six- or ten-second ad.
  • Full-motion content can be used on the digital city displays.
  • Subtle/limited motion is possible on the digital roadside displays.
  • There are 88 digital locations you can use to develop your idea.

  • The submission deadline for your creative idea is Friday 06 May at 23.59.
  • Ideas that are submitted after 23.59 on Friday 06 May or that fail to meet the criteria will not be reviewed. These submissions will be excluded from the competition.
